The Qing period (清代, 1644–1912) represents the final imperial dynasty in Chinese history and is defined by administrative consolidation, demographic expansion, and the extension of state oversight into regional and commercial spheres. The Qing government maintained the bureaucratic structures inherited from the Ming while establishing new mechanisms of cultural and economic integration across a multi-ethnic empire. Population growth, interregional trade, and the circulation of skilled labor contributed to the expansion of artisanal production.

Material culture of the Qing period reflects the coexistence of imperial workshop systems and commercial craft networks. The imperial ateliers (内务府造办处), particularly during the Kangxi (1661–1722), Yongzheng (1722–1735), and Qianlong (1735–1796) reigns, coordinated the production of porcelain, lacquer, metalwork, jade, textiles, and other materials for court use. These workshops standardized forms, surface treatments, and decorative programs while supporting technical experimentation and refinement.

Commercial production flourished alongside court manufacture. Urban and regional workshops supplied goods to domestic markets, religious institutions, and expanding global trade networks. Ceramics played a central role in these exchanges. The imperial kilns at Jingdezhen produced regulated wares for the court and commissioned export goods, while private kilns in Jingdezhen and other regions produced a wide range of objects for internal and overseas distribution. The development of overglaze enamel palettes (including famille verte, famille rose, and related palettes) and the continuation of underglaze blue decoration reflect evolving aesthetic and technical conditions.

Other craft traditions—including woven and embroidered textiles, carved lacquer, jade and hardstone work, and metalwork—demonstrate both continuity with earlier practices and adaptation to changing cultural contexts. Workshop hierarchies, apprenticeship systems, and market structures shaped the production, circulation, and reception of Qing material culture.

The significance of the Qing period lies in the sustained operation of large-scale court workshops, the coexistence of state and commercial production systems, and the extensive circulation of Chinese craft objects within global trade networks. These conditions shaped both the internal development of Chinese craft traditions and their reception beyond East Asia.
